The Importance of Women’s Month

“She is water. Strong enough to drown you, soft enough to cleanse you, and deep enough to save you.”

On 9th  August every year, our country marks Women’s Day , during which we pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. 2025 marks the 69th anniversary of the march.

Women’s Day and Month celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in South Africa, including their role in shaping the country’s history, culture, and economy. By recognising and honouring women’s achievements, Women’s Month inspires future generations of women and girls to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact.

What is the Theme of Women’s Day in South Africa 2025?

This year we celebrate Women’s Month under the theme “Building Resilient Economies for All“, which is timely and urgent. It draws attention to the need for economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable; one that not only recognises the contributions of women but also works to remove the barriers that keep them from fully participating.

Women in South Africa still face significant challenges, including lower pay, limited job opportunities, and unequal access to education and resources, as well as high rates of gender-based violence, femicide, and rape.

As former President Mandela stated, “The empowerment of women is the only way to ensure the sustainable development of society.

The National Women’s Month programme is based on ongoing interventions across the work of government, civil society, and the private sector within the context of the national priorities outlined by government.

Women’s Month allows us to gauge how far we have come in transforming society, particularly the transformation of unequal power relations between women and men. Furthermore, there is focus on gender oppression, sexism, racism, and creating a conducive environment that enables women to take control of their lives.

How can men support women’s rights?
  • We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.
  • We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements.
  • We can take the time to reflect on and celebrate the progress made in our country in support of women.

We can pay tribute to the many unsung heroines in our communities, who lead by their example – with courage, integrity, dignity and kindness.

By celebrating Women’s Day and Month, South Africans can come together to recognise the progress made, address ongoing challenges, and work towards a more just and equitable society for all.

Today, we acknowledge all women who serve as educators, guardians, caregivers, and role models for our boys and thank them from the bottom of our hearts. We are as men – fathers, sons, grandsons, nephews – indeed indebted to them.

“She is more precious than jewels and nothing you desire can compare with her.”
Proverbs 3: v 15

Women are more valuable than some of the most precious items on earth; therefore we need to love, care, and cherish them at all times and they will return that love.

Thank you to the women in our lives for all that they do for us on a daily basis. We are very blessed and eternally grateful. May God continue to bless them in our lives and may we always be sincerely grateful to them.
